EYES WIDE OPEN: THE FILMS OF STANLEY KUBRICK

Join us for a day exploring the dazzling world of film director Stanley Kubrick, one of post-war Hollywood’s most brilliant directors. With titles like DR STRANGELOVE, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, CLOCKWORK ORANGE, BARRY LYNDON, FULL METAL JACKET and EYES WIDE SHUT, each film revolutionised the way movies were made, and how audiences perceived the universe around them.

Doors open 10.00.  Voluntary contribution £10 at box office on the day.  Collect a Lunch slip with your ticket, and place your order at café bar before entering theatre.  Theatre opens 10.15.

10.30 – MORNING INTRODUCTION: Early Kubrick.  His rise in New York to become a self-taught LIFE magazine photographer and independent film-maker in the 1950’s.

10.45 – Screening THE KILLING (1956, Cert 12). Pacy and ingenious heist thriller, with stylish Noir visuals. Sterling Hayden and Coleen Gray join an expert gang to steal $2m, using a thrilling plan involving split-second timing at a racetrack. But when the horses leave the starting gate, can everyone in the group be trusted?

1.00 – AFTERNOON INTRODUCTION:  Late Kubrick.  His move to England, and the creation of a series of innovative and influential masterpieces up to 1999.

1.15 – Screening THE SHINING (1980, Cert 15) Stephen King’s haunted-house novel, of a family locked into a vast luxury hotel over the winter months, was transformed into a breathtaking supernatural epic that broke the rules of the genre.  Starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, and now a modern classic.
