On stage, Ian McKellen rivalled Olivier as the definitive performance of Shakespeare’s (though not history’s) dazzling villain, and then transformed it into this pacy, very cinematic political thriller. Ingeniously updated to a 1930’s Britain on the brink of fascism, director Richard Loncraine dynamically stages every scene in magnificent UK locations and stylish Art Deco interiors. And the cast…. Annette Bening (Elizabeth Woodville), Kristen Scott-Thomas (Lady Anne), Robert Downey Jr (Rivers), Maggie Smith (Duchess of York), Nigel Hawthorne (Clarence), Dominic West (Richmond) and many more are clearly having a great time.
