William Lindsay's great great grandfather progressed from penniless orphaned cabin boy to shipping magnate and MP. After nine years at sea, he became a shipbroker and shipowner. His ships were involved in emigration to Australia and Canada, in the Crimean War, and the American Civil War. His diaries in the National Maritime Museum are full of anecdotes of famous Victorians whom he met, ranging from Brunel, Dickens, Disraeli, Lincoln and Nightingale.
